Zinedine Zidane’s shock announcement that it’s all over for his son Enzo
At the age of 29, Enzo Zidane, the eldest son of football legend Zinedine Zidane, has announced his retirement from professional football, a thoughtful decision supported by his family.
Trained at Real Madrid, where his father left an indelible mark, Enzo felt the weight of an imposing legacy, ultimately deciding to step back to focus on his personal and family life.
Enzo Zidane has ended his football career, a decision influenced by the lack of joy felt on the field, according to reports by the newspaper ‘As’.
Despite his start under the glitter of Real Madrid, he only played one official match for the club, a symbolic burden for someone who chose to use his mother’s surname, Fernandez, to alleviate pressure.
The Journey of a Famous Name
After leaving Real Madrid for Alavés, Enzo wandered among several clubs across Europe, playing in the Spanish Liga, as well as in Switzerland, Portugal, and France, never quite finding his place.
His career concluded at Fuenlabrada, where he continually faced comparisons and heightened expectations because of his famous father.
« People compare you, criticize you, want more from you, say that you are here because you are the son of someone… », he shared about the difficulty of being seen primarily through the prism of his lineage.
A Developing Personal Life
Enzo’s decision to retire from football is also a lifestyle choice, to focus on his family. In a relationship with Karen Gonçalves, he is the father of three daughters: Sia, born in 2022, and twins Giulia and Kaia, born in 2024.
This new direction towards his investments and his role as a father marks a turning point, seeking to free himself from the expectations of the football world to write his own story.
Although Enzo steps away from the field, the Zidane name remains present in football through his brothers: Luca, a goalkeeper at Grenada; Théo, a midfielder at Cordoba; and Elyaz, a defender at Betis’s reserve team.
