In the last years, with the increasing use of technology and social media, we are able to quickly and easily understand the international trends and styles in interior decoration. For that reason, Housetherapie will show you the leading design trends in 2021, a number of concepts we have gathered to make it easier for you to keep yourself updated.

The suggestions from IKEA and the world’s leading design houses are a good guide to discover the latest trends in interior design. Below we will show you the most noticeable one for 2021.

Dark woods

Furniture leans to darker colors. There is a shift away from the pale, bleached woods that were very popular due to the Scandinavian trend in recent years. Darker wood tones this year bring a renaissance of retro and 80s glamour and offer a new approach to modern luxury.

In fact, wood is still a trend, particularly when it is combined with other materials such as glass and metal in highly valuable and original design solutions.

Metal handles and legs are the perfect final touch to bring an extra touch of vintage interior design. A fusion of wood, gold, bronze, and black marble gives a very sophisticated feel to many pieces of furniture.

Even though oak wood is still very popular, many new products are appearing in darker woods, such as Wenge. Lime bleached wood is no longer fashionable, for this year it is more about rustic and dark woods.

Vintage designs, such as these triangular dining chairs, represent one of the hottest trends to see this year.

Terrazzo

Do you feel the recent return of terrazzo in interiors? The trend of terrazzo started last year, and this year it will probably explode in both design, graphics, and architecture, and will likely last.

The terrazzo floor was the typical floor of 16th-century Italian Venetian houses, a cheap solution that brought together scattered pieces of marble and granite to form a mosaic.

Yet, unlike the actual vintage terrazzo which is a mix of really small pieces scattered in the concrete, the terrazzo we see today is a mix of different marbles with larger sizes, lower density, and a more eye-catching graphic appearance.

This modern mosaic was created by Max Lamb, a material that he called Marmoreal, composed of four different types of Italian marble and 5% polyester resin to obtain a more durable, less porous, and stronger stone than natural marbles. It looks quite different from traditional terrazzo and is far more interesting.

Natural and warm materials

Natural materials such as wood, clay, or cane, will replace the cold marble, which was in great demand these last years. The natural texture of cane or rattan will also be used extensively to add extra value to the rooms.

Industrial metal style

While metal shades will still be used widely, and as we have mentioned, more specifically bronze, gradually, we see more and more industrial-looking metals, like black steel or polished metals. The brass, polished and silver nickel are coming back.

Mixing hot and cold metals, such as iron and bronze, will also remain in use.

Terracotta floor

The warm materials on the floors and the walls like the terracotta tiles will replace the cold materials like white or neutral tones of today. Unlike the 80s, they will have a beautiful natural matte finish, to be used in floors and wall tiles, as well as in fireplaces.
